A messy bun is a perfect hairstyle for any occasion because it’s super easy to create and it looks great on just about everyone, regardless of hair length or texture. The only downside to this hairstyle? It’s not exactly the best-looking thing in the world when you first create it! Luckily, there are lots of ways to make your messy bun look much better than it started, and these tips will help you learn how to do that easily and quickly!
A lot of people tend to think they can’t pull off a messy bun because their hair is too curly or too straight. But, by choosing a bun that matches your hair type, you’ll be able to get your style done much easier.
Here are some tips for each hair type.
For these types of buns, you will want to make sure that you have the volume at your roots and create lots of texture around your face with loose curls. This will help balance out your look so it doesn’t look like you just rolled out of bed.
If you have straight hair, consider adding in some waves to give yourself more body around your face. This will help offset any super-straight pieces that might make it seem like you didn’t try hard enough with your hairstyle.
First, you’ll need a fine-tooth comb (preferably a rat tail comb) to detangle your hair and brush it into shape. You’ll also need some bobby pins to secure your bun once it’s in place. A mirror will help you style as well, of course! Then, grab a few bobby pins, put on your favorite music, and get ready for step two.
A messy bun is like a burrito, which means you’ll need to put all your ingredients in place before wrapping it up. Part your hair where you want to start and leave it to one side. You’ll also need a hair elastic (or two if you have long hair) and some bobby pins or large safety pins if you want to add volume at the top of your head. This might sound obvious but make sure that any accessories are out of sight when you’re not using them. Your messy bun won’t look as good with a scarf hanging down!
Remember, if you want your bun to look on-point, you’ll need a really good base. Start by using anti-frizz serum and scrunch in some texturizing spray. Then use two medium-sized hair elastics (your exact size will depend on how high up you want your bun to sit) to fasten your hair away from your face. Finally, twist all of your hair into a ponytail at the nape of your neck and secure it with an elastic band. Be sure not to pull too tightly or else you could end up with that dreaded dent in your forehead.
To finish your messy bun, you’ll want to tie off a section of hair from both sides of your ponytail with an elastic. For a finished look, you can wrap around your hair tie with one or two pieces of bobby pins before you tie it off with an elastic. This will hold it in place and give you that final polished look.
Even with practice, your bun may not turn out perfect on day one. Don’t worry!
